Daytime chess in school offers all children in the early grades the chance to learn the basics of this great game. For those students who would like to take their game to the next level, Arts and Athletics offer afterschool chess featuring instruction by Grand Masters and National Champions.

Tournaments We Host on the Upper West Side
March 31, 2019–PS 9 (84th and Columbus)

Beginner Chess 
Beginner Chess is offered twice per week. Interested student may sign up for one or the other…or both if they just can’t get enough!

Chess Intermediate-Advanced 
Chess Intermediate-Advanced is offered twice per week, Tuesday and Friday, until 5:00 p.m. Children who are invited by the coaches are asked to attend both.

Chess Team  
Chess masters Raul Marquez and Oscar Garcia teach children about chess tactics, strategy, and philosophy as they prepare to compete at tournaments at the local, state, and national levels. Tournaments are optional but they are a lot of fun and an excellent way to accelerate the learning process.

In addition to our two sections of chess offered on Fridays, Mr. Garcia will conduct this class completely in Spanish!

To support our students’ development in chess, we will host two chess tournaments during the school year–one in the fall and one in the spring (Dates to be announced). In addition to our “home” tournaments, children can take part in other local events around the city.
