Performing Arts
A cornerstone of Arts and Athletics programming, the performing arts help students to develop poise and confidence in performance — foundations for future success and enjoyment!
First Steps to Musical Theater at PS 84 gr k-5
Students learn the basics of musical theater: dancing, singing, and acting. Engaging in age-appropriate theater activities, students practice learning dialogue and staging and presenting their work to an audience.
Beginning Tap at PS 84 gr K-2
This class is a fun and great learning experience for all those tapping toes and clicking heels! Students will learn classic steps such as “step-shuffle-ball-change” along with exploring rhythms and tap sounds.
Movement at PS 84 gr K-2
Students will enjoy this amazing class that involves various forms of movement, including coordination games, dances, and basic sports, all with the goal of increasing motor skills, coordination, and fitness.
Creative Movement and Dance at PS 84 gr 3-5
Elements of dance including, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, Funk, House, and West-African introduce a variety of skills to encourage children to use dance as a form of expression and a way to connect to their bodies.
Technology and Design
Increasing in popularity every cycle is our STEM offerings which challenge students to observe closely and then “program” events in the real world.
Robotics at PS 84 gr 3-5
Lego Robotics challenge students to build vehicles, devices, and creatures that can then be programmed to act in pre-determined ways. It’s loads of fun but it also serves as a powerful introduction to computer programming and design.
Computer Game Star Mechanic at PS 84 gr 3-5
Students will learn coding concepts and principles and apply them in a fun way! Students will use Gamestar Mechanic using interactive learning modules, mini-games, coding projects, and puzzles.
Chess
Chess instructors teach children about chess tactics, strategy, and philosophy as they prepare to compete at tournaments at the local, state, and national levels. Tournaments are optional but they are a lot of fun and an excellent way to accelerate the learning process.
Chess Masters in Spanish at 84 gr 2-5
In addition to our two sections of chess offered on Fridays, Mr. Garcia will conduct this class completely in Spanish!
Chess Masters at PS 84 gr K-5
Beginner/Intermediate and Advanced sections of chess are offered on Fridays. Chess instructors teach children about chess tactics, strategy, and philosophy as they prepare to compete at tournaments at the local, state, and national levels.
To support our students’ development in chess, we will host two chess tournaments during the school year–one in the fall and one in the spring (Dates to be announced). In addition to our “home” tournaments, children can take part in other local events around the city.
Language and Literature
Arts and Athletics language and literature offerings include an array of fun and challenging classes that use and develop academic and intellectual skill in a fun and relaxed environment.
Language study may include Spanish, French or Mandarin and activities that cultivate our students’ love of the written word are Creative Writing, School Newspaper, and Book Club.
Creative Writing with Mr. Carlson at PS 84 gr 3-5
Poetry…fiction…creative writing: this class is designed for students to have fun, meet new friends, and experiment with writing.
Gazette Espresso Mercredi at PS 84 gr 3-5
In this class, students will create a newsletter in French from start to finish!
Sports and Physical Activity
The emphasis in our athletics department is to promote physical fitness, develop skill and agility, and teach life skills such as sportsmanship and team play. These are just a few of our offerings.
Selected Sports at 84 gr K-2
An assortment of playground sports and physical activity- soccer, tennis, baseball, kickball, you name it. Individual and team challenges are designed to invigorate, enthuse, and engage students.
Running Starts at PS 84 gr 3-5
Running Starts develops skills for running and the sport of track and field. The daily workout routine will involve jogging, form and coordination drills.
Tennis Time Beginner or Advanced at PS 8 gr K-5
Tennis class is taught outdoors (weather permitting, otherwise, indoors).
Yoga Abhyasa at PS 84 gr K-2
Yoga for Kids emphasizes playfulness and mindfulness. Children are introduced to yoga practice through a variety of poses, breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as games and exercises.
Lively Skills
Some programs can’t be categorized as arts or athletics and yet are among the best examples of Re-Create’s afterschool sensibility. These classes may include cooking, gardening, and ecology.
Junior Advertising with Christine at PS 84 gr 3-5
Students will have fun learning about advertising. They will create their own product or service and package it their own way!
