The Arts and Athletics organization is continuing to expand performance opportunities for our instrumental music students. Performance formats include open classes, recitals, jam sessions, and full-blown concerts. We believe that music performance in all its forms can play an important role in our musicians’ artistic development. In one sense, the posting of dates allows students and teachers to set concrete goals and develop plans to work toward them. In another sense, the performances themselves demand a higher level of focus from the players while at the same time assembling an audience to applaud their hard work and accomplishment. Our aim is for each performance to be at once a joyous occasion and an unparalleled tool for learning.
Among the events to look forward to for the 2024-25 school year are the end-of-year concerts in May where our 4th graders and 5th graders will play in sectionals as well as all together in a full-grade ensemble. (Stay tuned for specific dates!)
Also, over the intervening months, students will have the chance to play for audiences in a variety of less formal settings. See details below for our trumpet students’ afterschool concerts as well as our monthly Sunday camp concerts…
Trumpet Academy Afterschool Concerts
Trumpet instructor Camilo Molina is teaching two afterschool trumpet classes–beginner trumpet on Mondays and advanced trumpet on Thursdays–and both classes are near capacity with six to eight students eager to improve their playing. Camilo has set five dates for afterschool trumpet performances which will take place in the PS 9 auditorium between 5:20 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the end of the late session of afterschool. Parents, friends, and fellow students are all invited to attend and there will be a reception with refreshments following each performance. Tournament Camps at PS 9
Once a month, Arts and Athletics is hosting a Sunday brain camp at PS 9 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. One track is an official USCF-sanctioned four-round chess tournament (from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and the other track is for instrumental music (between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.) featuring one-on-one and group instruction, music workshops, and culminating with a concert featuring performances by our participants. The full-day camp option begins at 9:00 a.m. and goes until 5:00 p.m. Individual players and groups from PS 9, PS 334, and PS 452 (the three Arts and Athletics hosts schools) are eligible to participate.
For those families signing up for the full-day camp, there will also be a sports and physical activity breaks. This component coordinated and supervised by our Arts and Athletics sports instructors.
